BTL to pay Business Tax

In accordance with the order by Belize Revenue Magistrate, Ed Usher, Belize Telemedia (BTL) is to pay business tax that totals more than BZD 4.6 million or USD 2.3 million for February 2008 and March 2008.

This order was issued at a hearing held at the Magistrate’s Court, Belize City, on June 24. According to the order, BTL must pay the sum of BZD 2.36 million by July 1, 2008, and the balance of BZD 2.3 million by July 8, 2008.

It should be noted that BTL had made attempts to argue that under a favourable arrangement struck with the previous government of Prime Minister Said Musa, and its obligations to pay business tax in full were waived under particular circumstances. But during an extraordinary session beginning on June 21, Chief Justice Dr. Abdulai Conteh reviewed the case brought by Belize Telemedia and made a decision that the company must continue paying taxes until it is fully resolved.
