Sri Lankan “film crew” suspected in human trafficking in Belize

The crew of 11 Sri Lankans who had traveled to Belize supposedly to make a movie were sent back because they were suspected of being involved in human trafficking using Belize as a springboard to try and get to the US.

However, the film crew went on the news and defended themselves boasting of their film-making credentials and saying they wanted to make a movie with the Belize Blue Hole as the backdrop. But, according to a representative of Sri Lanka’s Special Media Unit, they are not Sri Lankan movie makers. So, the Commissioner has decided to repatriate them to Sri Lanka.

US adds Belize to drug blacklist

US President Obama has added Belize to a blacklist of countries considered as major producers or transit routes for illegal drugs.

According to officials, cartels were using the jurisdiction as a route for smuggling cocaine from South America north to Mexico and the United States. The inclusion of Belize on the blacklist could reflect the growing influence of Mexico’s powerful drugs cartels.

As a result of the inclusion, Belize can face US sanctions.

Besides Belize, 22 countries were included on the drugs blacklist.

Belize’s 1st PM dies

George Price, Belize’s founding father and first prime minister, died on September 19, 2011 at the age of 92.

A week of mourning lasting until September 26 was announced by Prime Minister Dean Barrow.

Price was Belize’s first leader when it became independent from Britain on September 21, 1981. As head of the centrist People’s United Party, he served 2 terms as prime minister, in 1981-84 and 1989-1993, and is considered the father of Belize.

Consolidated Water Co. Ltd. announces 4th Quarter Cash Dividend

On September 12, Consolidated Water Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: CWCO) announced that its Board of Directors has declared a quarterly cash dividend of USD 0.075 per share. The dividend is payable October 31, 2011 to shareholders of record at the close of business October 1, 2011.

The company develops and operates seawater desalination plants and water distribution systems where naturally occurring supplies of potable water are scarce or nonexistent. It operates water production and distribution facilities in Belize. Also, Consolidated Water Co. Ltd. operates its facilities in the Cayman Islands, the British Virgin Islands and the Bahamas.
