National Agriculture & Trade Show holds 1st 2008 meeting

On February 20, the National Agriculture and Trade Show Committee for 2008 held its first meeting in 2008.

The meeting was used to agree upon the dates for the show. The dates were endorsed by Minister Rene Montero. These are May 9 and May 11.

The new National Agriculture and Trade Show Committee includes key stakeholders that will co-operate in order to make show 2008 a success. The centerpiece of the show will be agriculture, agro-industry and small business development.

New Cabinet announced in Belize

On February 8, 2008, it was announced that the United Democratic Party (UDP) had won general election in Belize to give a new Belize’s government for the 1st time in 10 years.

After anticipation, new Prime Minister of Belize, Dean Barrow, has officially announced his new cabinet.

He announced the following appointments:
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment – Gaspar Vega; Minister of Economic Development, Commerce, Industry and Consumer Protection – Erwin Contreras;
Attorney General, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade – Wilfred Elrington;
Minister of Labour, Local Government and Rural Development – Gabriel Martinez;
Minister of the Public Service, Governance Improvement and Elections and Boundaries – John Saldivar;
Minister of Public Utilities, National Emergency Management, Transport and Communications – Melvin Hulse.

Further appointments are expected to be announced shortly.

BELTRAIDE launches Plan of Action 2

The announcement of the launch of its Action Plan for the coming year has been discussed previously. However, there is something to add to it.

At the launch of BELTRAIDE’s Action Plan, Said Musa, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, National Development and the Public Service, was the guest speaker.

He suggested the success of the Belize Trade and Investment Development Service over the last 10 years can be seen as a manifestation of his Government’s commitment to an effective partnership with both public and private sector to build a stronger economy, to generate jobs and to spread the benefits due to growth and development.

Musa confirmed that BELTRAIDE will be continued to be supported by his government. He also added that the government will provide BELTRAIDE with resources necessary for unlocking the great potential and opportunities for the majority of Belize’s people.

In accordance with the data provided by BELTRAIDE, over the last 10 years, it has, with the government’s support, attracted more than USD 1.1 billion worth of investments.

New Belize’s Government announced

On February 8, 2008, it was announced that the United Democratic Party (UDP) had won general election in Belize. Dean Barrow, the former leader of the opposition swore in as Prime Minister the same day.

Barrow’s party won 20 out of the 31 seats in the House of Representatives. It is worth mentioning that the UDP will give a new Belize’s government for the 1st time in 10 years.

Speaking on the radio and TV, Barrow said that he is grateful to the Belizean people for the opportunity to head a new government and announced that the government “will restore Belizean economy and re-establish transparency, accountability and good governance”.
